And that's complicated by the fact that it as a as a crime is very unusual at the time. podcast-host

And as what we might call outsiders descend on the community, be they journalists and then over time policemen, authorities of various different kinds, we see this huge gap emerge in terms of their lack of understanding of what this community is. podcast-host

And one thing that I think that is really striking, I think something that people today find very difficult to kind of understand, is that the people of the mab translated community, the neighbors of the Joyce family have been attacked, they don't offer podcast-host

Aid initially to the victims. podcast-host

And you know, you can see how some people were just shocked that this wouldn't happen. podcast-host

You know, they'd live side by side for generations, and then this happens, and the community are seen to stand idly by. podcast-host

It's probably worth putting some of that in context, though, as well, because I think as we explore this case, we do see like two very different worldviews, understandings of daily life, which don't that they don't particularly understand each other. podcast-host

that instance might be a good one to kind of pick apart. podcast-host

We've already talked about how a lot of detail about what happened on that night is not fully understood today. podcast-host

Part of it is because a reticence to talk, you know, among some members, but also a huge issue in this case, and something that you read draw out in your book, is language and the linguistic difference between this community and maybe certainly the authorities in Dublin. podcast-host

And in a recent i i interview I talked to Sir Nicholas Wolfe and he talked about how by this point, the late nineteenth century, Irish speakers are at a severe disadvantage in Irish society. podcast-host

But could you give listeners then a picture of the linguistic makeup? podcast-host

I don't know if that's the correct term, but like basically who speaks Irish, who speaks English in this community, because that does become a key factor if people don't fully understand the people they're talking to, or as we see later, people are accused if they don't fully understand what's happening around them. podcast-host

It becomes a huge issue at the time, obviously m most importantly, but then podcast-host

Decades later, as historians go back through these the surviving records, there's a lot of questions about, you know, where this information came from and and did the people writing it down fully understand the community and community members and the people essentially at the heart of this case who would have known the truth or would have been able to shed greater light on it at least. podcast-host
