And we heard from the police side of the government's action group for illicit tobacco that spoke in Auckland last week.
They said that we're not at that level yet, but they are concerned about us reaching that level.
They also added that bad actors from Australia, they believe that they are eyeing up New Zealand as a potential next step.
Well, what we've seen, we've gone and done our own investigation and visited a few shops that are selling this product.
One in particular was selling loose bags of tobacco that were essentially in a Ziploc bag and you had $25 for 200 grams or something like that.
That's obviously one aspect of it.
The other side, as you mentioned, is branded cigarettes.
So you're seeing brands like Double Happiness, Hongta Shan.
Not all of them.
There are a few other brands out there that are...
fall under that umbrella.
But the thing that makes them illicit often is that they're being sold for well less than even the excise duty that's meant to be paid on top of them.
So some of the ones that I've seen have gone for as low as $15, $13 when your retail packs go for $30, $40, $50.
And the other important thing about them is that they don't have any of the health warnings or the
by law is required to be on tobacco products in New Zealand.
I believe it's 75% of the front cover has to be covered.
Yeah, the quit line info, that sort of stuff.
And they don't have any of that.
They're sort of harking back to the old 90s, 80s, flashy gold and red and shiny packets of cigarettes.
