And I found myself saying to him, well, for starters, stop trying to reach them.
Can you be reached by them?
Can you allow your heart to be altered?
Can you let them change you?
So you don't go to the margins to make a difference, then it's about you.
But you go to the margins so that the folks at the margins make you different.
And then it's about us, where people are finally walking each other home to the kind of kinship that God has in mind for all of us.
Yeah, I think absolutely.
You know, it went to times when it says that he's been moved by seeing them and seeing their suffering.
And they seem to him like sheep without a shepherd.
And there are all these moments where he, throughout the gospel, where you can see in a palpable way, he's allowing...
his heart to be altered.
It's, you know, in the spiritual exercises, in the two standards, the meditation on the two standards, Ignatius says, see Jesus standing in the lowly place.
And it's a powerful image because Jesus isn't pointing at the lowly place and say, get your ass over there.
It just says, see him standing there.
And you have a sense that maybe that's where the joy is
is standing in that lowly place with humility and receiving people and listening to people and allowing yourself to be reached by folks who suffer so much.
And so for me, that's kind of a model of what I hope for always.
Otherwise, it becomes kind of saving, rescuing and fixing.
And you want to dispel that notion.
