Huge stigma.

I remember and, you know, I was very lucky, you know, that my parents allowed me to keep my son because there was another girl that I used to know who she was.

She was up working in Dublin.

She was in the civil service, but she was younger than me.

She was like 18.

And she, I remember she was pregnant at the same time as me.

We were both unmarried mothers and we used to find solace in each other.

But then she disappeared and she had gone to the mother and baby's home and then she came back, you know, whatever, nine months later and there was no baby and she just went back into her life.

And I remember thinking,

Like, it was like as if the pregnancy never happened and my heart went out to her.

There was a lot of stigma for me as well.

My parents, like, didn't know how to handle it.

I was very lucky with Mary.

My sister Mary was incredible at that time and she was a huge support to me.

My brothers and sisters were, but Mary was brilliant.

So Mary was able to...

You know, I went to live with Mary and she had just been married and, you know, she married Joe and everything.

And I went to live with Mary and she helped me with the baby for the first few months of Owen's life.

And yeah, and really, it was the best thing that ever happened to me was having my son and my daughter, Owen and Aoife.
