My name is Francesco Billeri.
I'm professor of sociology and demography at the University of Oxford.
Just after the year 2000, suddenly fertility was on the increase in several societies.
We did some calculations and basically the new change is not only due to migration, also the locals are changing.
Also because it's the basic structure of institutions in society that is changing.
Daycare is developing, other solutions are
basically allowing women to lead a career and be mothers.
Yes, indeed.
Demographers used to be the lucky ones because we thought that it was easy to forecast population change.
I think that's no longer true.
It's no longer true at the global level because recent fertility trends are showing that the future is much more uncertain than we thought.
So, for instance, there may be a complete change in the ranking of fertility levels within the world.
