Visiting hours were suspended and when Dad was moved to room 6 of the short stay unit, the hospital said they'd have to keep him in over the weekend.
On Friday, with sanitised hands and a blue face mask, I was allowed in for five minutes to bedeck his bedstead with a splash of green and red.
Dad was a bit out of sorts, wondering if he'd be left on his own or even get home to see the match at all.
With a little persistence and the saintly understanding of nursing staff, agreement was finally reached that he could have one visitor for the duration of the game.
A TV would be made available in a small room nearby.
Nurses on the ward noticed the county colours adorning Dad's bed.
They cheerfully wrote Up Mayo at the top of his charts and tagged Mayo for Sam on the back of his wheelchair.
As it turned out, there were only two other patients in room six on the day.
Both beds were curtained off.
Staff saw no need to move us out, so we parked ourselves under the TV in the middle of the ward.
With crowds streaming down North Circular Road, it was surreal to see Mayo and Tyrone Colours blur the window.
The TV was turned low so as not to disturb the other patients, but we could soon hear the roar of 82,000 fans surge back to us directly from Croke Park, just half a mile away.
For medicinal purposes, I brought in two measures of Captain Morgan, a can of Coke and cellophane slices of lime.
With plastic cups, we toasted.
Mwiyo aboo.
And the ball was thrown in.
As we sat back, I stole a glance at Dad, pyjamaed in his Mayo for Sam hospital wheelchair, coloured in braided wool of green and red.
Expectant.
Never, ever did I want so much for Mayo to win.
If ever could this be the day?
