Brown denounced slavery in language fierce and bitter and thought that slaveholders had forfeited their right to live.
He thought that he had no better use for his life than to lay it down in the cause of the slave.
The feeling of the nation must be quickened.
The conscience of the nation must be roused.
The propriety of the nation must be startled, the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed, and its crimes against God and man must be denounced.
