Many were simple pictures, drawn on an iPad, but I loved them.
Hockney was in lockdown with three assistants and his dachshund, Ruby.
He'd begun drawing daffodils to cheer up friends and family.
Do remember they can't cancel the spring, he told them.
He spent almost two years at the Normandy farmhouse, happy to paint with few interruptions.
Now in his 80s, his work ethic was still prodigious.
As with a previous interlude in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, he painted nature as it changed through the seasons.
The weather in Ireland in early lockdown, as you may recall, was radiant.
And I, lucky to have a garden, was growing plants myself.
I remember thinking, he's 82.
He's painting on an iPad.
And yes, like he says, spring can't be cancelled.
Roll on to last year when I saw another mention of Hockney, his largest ever exhibition.
450 pieces spanning his entire career and including the Normandy work had just opened in Paris and would run until late summer.
Tickets were 16 euro per person.
So I told my patient husband, I'm inviting you to Paris to a David Hockney exhibition and we're going to swim in the River Seine.
No way, he replied.
But I persuaded him and that glorious trip glows in my memory.
Monday, August 18th, our plane approaches Paris.
The sky is azure blue.
