So some of them don't have doors.
There's no stairs going up to the second floor.
All the wiring and metalwork has been stripped out.
These houses and these buildings are beyond repair.
They have to be knocked down.
There's no coherent sense of a community or a society or a place that can be inhabited.
And these are not small corners of the capital.
These are like vast, vast suburbs, which were the beating heart of Syria's middle class.
They're just gone.
And that's in Damascus.
When you go north, when you go to the northeast, when you go to places like Aleppo and Homs,
the devastation is even worse.
And, you know, I imagine being a Syrian and looking at this area and thinking, where on earth do you start?
Imagine an empty plot of land, which then you had to, you know, not only build a house on, but also connect it to the water and the power and the electricity and the internet network.
Well, Syria is even worse than that because you don't have empty land.
You have mountains and mountains of rubble.
Well, the figures are eye-watering.
The World Bank says that more than $100 billion worth of physical assets in Syria have been destroyed during the war.
Some reconstruction costs are estimated to be more than $200 billion.
That's more than 10 times the country's GDP in 2024.
