And although I fear it might be apocryphal, Lee is said to have leaned back, smiled and said, young man, why didn't you tell me that before the battle?
Even a fool like myself can see it all now.
And there you have it.
It's really only in sports and war that people propose something other than what didn't work and think that we are military or sports geniuses.
Because, of course, something else might have gone better.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean when you see your childhood comrade turned into a pink mist next to you and heads being blown off and people acting, in every range of emotion, some people come to life during battle.
By all means, that's where they're supposed to be.
That's what they're good at.
But for most people, it is just an absolutely terrifying focused moment where what's in front of you is what counts most.
And you are trying to kill or be killed.
And yet the moments of humanity, both during battle and immediately after, also stand in stark contrast to the animal-like, you know, machine-like, because they drilled so much, you know, fighting that characterizes so many big Civil War battles.
No intention at all, but let me first compliment you for not saying that Meade let Lee escape.
They fought each other all the way back to the Potomac River where Lee took up such a strong position that Lee would get back into Virginia too.
The most interesting timing is not that it's the nation's birthday, of which people were cognizant and the South viewed sort of their efforts as a second American revolution.
