The North won this massive victory, but people could rightly point out that it really didn't change the strategic situation other than the North having a great boost of morale.
In the immediate aftermath, the war returned back to Virginia where it had been.
Sure, the Confederate Army suffered a mighty blow, but the North also lost more than 20% of their army.
People might be able to have questioned how big of a deal it was, certainly at the time.
I still think to this day, Vicksburg was much more important and changed the strategic scenario much more.
Gettysburg, for what it prevented, was obviously very important.
Imagine the disaster it could have been if Philadelphia and Harrisburg or Baltimore fell to the Confederates.
Who knows?
So what I would say, though, is that a few things conspired to make Gettysburg more important in the public mind.
And this started happening right in 1863 and it continues to this day.
One –
It's the biggest battle, as you mentioned.
Two photographers and correspondents came right away because it's near population centers.
So people suddenly cared more about things that happened on their doorstep.
So these things proliferated into papers and photographic studios.
That solidified the popularity.
Then here comes the Gettysburg Address in November to make the place even more famous.
Plus, by then, it had also become the first preserved Civil War battlefield.
This is, of course, near and dear to me and happens to be true.
