You know, I'll say that both sides are doing it.
The south did try to portray and Lee did issue orders saying you will not pillage these places.
You will not steal.
You will pay for things with a government voucher or with Confederate money.
Lee didn't think Confederate money would be worthless two years from then.
So you could say he's trying to be the benevolent, genteel conqueror, so to speak.
But the North is doing a lot of that in the South and trying to muster up the local populace, although it's things like the March to the Sea and the terrors of how the North treated the South that really get the play in popular history.
So I would say that both sides do that with some savvy.
I couldn't agree more.
And the quote you read wasn't the only one to refer to the battles of old.
It was a Gibraltar.
It was this.
It was that.
They liked getting into military history a little bit.
But I really think it has a lot to do with still.
It was on their doorstep.
People could go see it and people had easy access to the photographs taken there, which they didn't say for Vicksburg where 20 pictures were taken during the whole war.
um, at Vicksburg and you have hundreds at Gettysburg.
So it was accessible.
