And they were taken in these places where, you know, with twisted rocks and everything like that to make it memorable.
In the July heat, right when putrefaction had taken hold, you can literally see flies on some of the corpses at Antietam and Gettysburg.
So it's just a terrible situation.
And like you said, it sticks with you, especially in 3D, and especially that you can go back to the exact spot today and contemplate it for good or for bad.
And that's why battlefield preservation, among the reasons it's important.

Book a licensed battlefield guide to go in your car with you.
It should be the first thing you do when you go.
I'm biased because I've been a guide for more than 30 years.
And you can reserve one, make it the first thing you do, and then you can spend the rest of your time, the next four hours or hopefully the next two or three days, exploring the place in more detail and checking out the stuff that interests you.
It's hard to see Gettysburg in just a half a day, but it's doable.
So we provide you with additional options when you get there.
And you can tour yourself around.
You could download American Battlefield Trust or other apps if you'd like.
It's a very easy place to tour, but it's disorienting.
And you've got to spend the time to figure it out on your own.
