It's staying there is the problem.

So how about

10 times as many soldiers doing it across this mile-wide plain, except a few things.

A, the Union Commander Meade sort of outguessed Robert E. Lee and guessed where he would attack and told the commander to be ready.

B, when Lee does attack across this field, it's going to take 20 minutes.

That's giving General Meade time to put, no joke, 15, 20, 25,000 reinforcements moving from his fishhook line in toward the center.

Third, the Union line is going to sort of bulge out to put the Confederates at a disadvantage.

But nonetheless, 12,500 men in a mile-wide line is going to make an impact, and they are going to push all the way right up to the Union line where it comes up to a climax where there's this –

Terrible melee, man-to-man, body-to-body, red with blood, black with smoke, bathed in sweat, and they literally just fight it out at this place called the Angle.

And might I add that some of your listeners might say, hey, it shouldn't be called Pickett's Charge.

It is true that fewer than half of the Confederate soldiers are Picketts, but he was the big force.

He was the only sort of—

fresh force on the battlefield.

So 5,500 of the 12,500 are pickets.

And Virginians are simply better at marketing than North Carolinians, which is why we call it pickets charge.

Correct.

And let me just say that you're perfectly right.

If 12,500 attack, maybe 6,000 or 7,000 reach the Emmitsburg Road that bisects the position.

But only a couple of thousands are brave or crazy enough to pass that road and go up to that final hill.

And of those thousands, we don't think that more than a couple of hundred might have pierced the Union line.
