Yeah, it's unusual to remember so much from a childhood because I was reading something today where somebody was saying that they couldn't remember their elementary school teachers.
And I'm like, I remember the custodians and the nurse and the teacher's aides.
But because of my depression, I lost a lot of memories.
I mean, some of the most unimpressive people...
And yet, so critical.
It astonishes me that people this average could be so critical about every aspect and judgmental.
My mother, I brought a girlfriend home one time, and within a minute, the woman made the mistake of being far enough away from my mother where she couldn't hear what my mother said, and my mother said, oh, she's so homely.
No!
There are pictures of every old lady where they were young and their wedding pictures.
She was a beautiful bride.
But she had no right to be denigrating anybody's appearance.
And it's just such a tacky, gross thing to be as somebody who comments about people's physicalities.
Anytime somebody came on TV with bad teeth, which is half the people who want to be interviewed for the nightly news, my mother would say, ugh, get your teeth fixed.
Or sometimes she would go like that when somebody would come on, like the most critical.
And then my brother's big thing was to criticize me, everything about me under the auspices of, well, we don't want you to get a big head.
But it was diminishing and belittling, and it got to the point where, and I could never put it into words until this sentence that came to me one day, and it's so simple.
I don't like how I feel about myself when I'm around these people.
I cut them off from time to time, or my mother didn't speak to me after the book came out.
She didn't speak to me for six months.
Well, the thing is, she didn't mind that anything really in the book, except that I had told these stories of her stealing Hallmark cards in the 1970s from the greeting card store she worked in.
