A patient of mine many, many years ago, who was a refugee from an awful war, and he said, there's two ways to deal with the things I've seen.

You can dig it all up and talk about it, or you can just pour concrete on it.

and I prefer to pour concrete.

And it worked for him.

Yeah, and I was just like, that's fine by me, but I'm here if you ever want to start that journey.

Well, I think it's just been misapplied.

My impression is that we have developed these tools, which are only tools to think about thinking and to help us get on with the business of easing suffering and making human beings have a better chance of a happy life.

We invented these tools and they're useful for some things, but we've allowed them to slip in, to creep into areas of life where they're not proving so helpful.

And so it's reasonable for us to push back and to appraise and say, well, is this helping?

Is it making us happier?

If it's not, why not?

What could we do about it?

Is there a better way for us to do it?

And there's nothing surer than the fact that within 20, 30 years, what we're talking about now will be considered complete rubbish.

And the people, they will look back on what we are saying now with total disdain.

And if we're lucky, they'll think it was quaint, but they'll probably think that our discourse now is laughable.

And so if you look through the history of psychiatry, that's all you see, that 20 or 30 years go by and everyone thinks, what were they on?

How could they think like that?
