So I've got an example in the book where I chat to somebody towards the end who has got dyspraxia and dyscalculia and has some difficulties with social interaction and understanding social codes and also has a little bit of an alcohol problem and had quite a neglected upbringing.

has difficulties with their moods, where they retreat to their bed for weeks at a time.

And I have this conversation where I say, well, we could zone in on any one of these problems and you could get a diagnosis of that.

You could say that you have

a neurodiversity issue with your autistic spectrum disorder, dyscalculia, dyspraxia.

We could talk about your addiction problems.

We could talk about complex PTSD because of your childhood, neglected childhood.

We could talk about depression.

And each of these things under our current frameworks steers you down different white forks in terms of how you get treatment.

It's the same patient.

It just depends how you focus it.

It's like, what are we going to focus on today?

And I quote the wonderful child psychiatrist, Bruce Perry, who's got a case study in his book about childhood trauma and neglect, The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, the book is called.

It's a wonderful, wonderful book.

And he uses an example of a patient who had had 12 different diagnoses, each of which necessitated different treatments.

But all his problems Perry traces to some key events in his toddler years.

And for him, for Perry, the treatment was to reenact a system of care, nurturing with massage therapy, dance, music,

occupational therapies, no drugs, to allow his development to go ahead where it was held up when he was a baby.

And Winnicott said the same thing.
