In this study, participants watched a film or films of traffic accidents. matched

And then they were asked this question. matched

And this question differed for each one of them. matched

Some people were asked, okay, how fast was the car going when it smashed into the other car? matched

Some of them were asked, how fast was it going when it collided? matched

When it bumped? matched

When it hit? matched

When it made contact? matched

the event stayed the same it was the same video each time the only thing that changed was that somebody else came in and used a certain selection of words the only thing that changed was the verb in the question what they found was that participants who heard the word smashed matched

who heard the word collided gave much higher speed estimates than those who heard the word made contact or bumped because they kind of trusted that if somebody else was using these words well matched

You know, they probably also had a more accurate opinion or a more accurate view, even though they had experienced it themselves. matched

What they found was that later on, when people were again asked to tell them some details about this car accident, sometimes two or three weeks later, people who had heard the word smashed, they started saying, well, I saw glass everywhere. matched

I saw blood. matched

I saw people very much hurt. matched

Even when those things actually didn't happen, they matched

There was no glass, there was no blood, but they genuinely believed it. matched
