Do you want to stop making submarines?
Well, no, because we really need nuclear submarines for a range of tasks.
Do you want a bailout of shipbuilding, including the new autonomous platforms?
No, you don't want to do that.
Do you want to bailout of GCAP at about a billion pounds a year?
Well, if you do that, then you will not deter Chinese technology by the end of the twenty.
So the the reason the dip took a year to get out is the MOD went in a doom loop where it realized it needed more money that than was on the table to deliver the SDR.
And then when it looked for things to cut, found there was nothing to cut.
The much more strategic problems, however, are if you look beyond the fourth year to the tenth year of the program.
The NATO target is 3.5% plus 1.5% of GDP by 2035.
The Treasury is planning to get to 3%.
And the difference between 3% and 3.5% is the affordability of the SDR.
And then there's the bit that everybody forgets about, which is the Defense Investment Plan, is the things that made the cut.
and in a reduced, hollowed out military, about half the iceberg in things like integrated air and missile defence, at least a sixty billion hole in infrastructure, major shortcomings in logistics, in mobilization, not even in the dip,
because they're simply unaffordable based on the current choices made by this government from the one point four trillion pounds it gets a year.
It was certainly deeply threatening.
And it and it's not so much about the practicalities of taking over Greenland, it's the shattering of the bond of trust on which all alliances rely.
And I think the more we look back on that, the more we'll see that as a seminal moment when Europe realised that no matter how much it really wants to know that the American taxpayer, American military, are going to underpin European security, they can

And in an environment where they see Russia becoming more threatening.
