That's an A&E and x-ray.
If you're not sure and you're in between, take a few hours and just see if it starts to get easier in terms of movement and whether they're able to get the swelling down to any degree or whether it sticks at that intense pain.
And that will kind of guide how severe it is and whether they're like, no, actually it could be a break because the bony bit is tender.
If
Yeah, I always pair pain with function.
So if it's really, really tender to touch, but you can actually do all your movements and when you functionally use it, it's fine, then probably less likely.
So I think a really, really important thing for people to remember is A&E is accident and emergency.
So you go into A&E really to rule in or out anything nasty.
It doesn't mean if there is nothing on an X-ray that there is no injury
because X-rays only look at bones.
So if...
It is a sprain, it is a ligament or muscle, etc.
The best thing you can do is get moving early within limits of pain.
So when you don't move an area for quite a while under pain, your brain goes, it's safe not to move it.
So we just won't move it.
you get used to not moving it and you get weaker and you get stiffer.
So if we can get it moving in the right patterns for that injury area, the sooner the better, you'll gain function quicker.
If it's really, really sore, I might go 24 hours, offload that foot and then let's go in again just so they've got a moment to like bring their nervous system down.
But typically early movement is better.
Yeah.
