So the partisans, by the second half of 1943, are a real force.
By time of the Treaty of Tehran, Churchill had accepted that Yugoslavia is going to have a new government and that it's going to be dominated by Tito, but he wanted Tito to bring in some pre-war non-communist politicians and he wanted the king to at least be allowed to return.
The situation on the Eastern Front had changed dramatically in October 1944 because Romania had surrendered and joined the Allies.
So instead of the Red Army having to fight its way through Romania, it could walk through Romania.
It got to Bulgaria and the Bulgarian partisans immediately staged an insurrection, which brought the Red Army down.
pretty close to the border with Serbia, and so suddenly the Red Army really can help Tito.
And what Tito had been summoned to Moscow for was for talks to agree that the Red Army would help with the liberation of Belgrade.
The two big national groups are the Croats and the Serbs.
And in November 1918, as the old empires are collapsing, Serbia still had military power.
So the Croats found themselves in a subservient position.
As the dust settled and a new state emerged,
There was only the king of Serbia because there wasn't the king of Croatia.
And so very quickly, the Serbs became the dominant group within that Yugoslav state.
And the Croats always felt throughout the interwar years that they were being forced to play second fiddle.
The promise had been a sort of federal state and the reality was that it was a unified kingdom in which the Serbs took all the big posts.
I mean, he is briefly arrested on several occasions, but it's only in 1928 that he is given a long-term prison sentence.
He was released on the promise of good behavior, and he didn't behave well.
He carried on being a trade unionist, doing the things that they didn't want.
So when they did imprison him, they added on these extra years to take account of his militancy.
He uses his appearance in court to denounce the existing status quo and to declare, I am a communist, the communists are for the people.
