I am of the opinion that the Russian war effort could have been much more successful if Putin honestly had a little bit more of some balls and called mobilization earlier in the war to swell the ranks and try to decisively overwhelm Ukraine in the early phases.
But he decided not to do that.
And we've sort of seen the results since then.
There are definitely fissures and there are some unhappy elements of the elite.
But but look, at the end of the day, Putin has optimized his whole regime.
He spent a quarter of a century optimizing his regime to be insulated from these sorts of threats.
And I think his regime is going to be pretty secure because Putin is a great student of how the Soviet Union fell apart in its last dying days.
Putin brought the business community pretty much to heel.
You can look into the Yukos case and basically said, you know, the oligarchs can be rich.
They can engorge themselves on the graft and the corruption, but stay out of the political arena.
And they basically abided by that.
And then the average Russian, unfortunately, they don't have a lot of agency in the current system.
And they've been trained and raised to not think like the way that those of us who live in Western democratic political traditions tend to think about these things.
So I hope to high heaven that I'm wrong.
I hope that someone will make a move.
I think we saw elements of that with Yevgeny Progozhin, but even Yevgeny Progozhin sort of crossed the Rubicon, but then cowardly fell back.
And then we saw how that went.
So I think it's a pretty low bar at this time.
