And there were people sleeping in the doorway of the metro stations because the gates were across.

And the Champs-Élysées, you could hardly walk down it for the people that there were.

There was certainly no vehicular traffic.

And, of course, to get a taxi.

We were living in suburban Paris and flying out the next morning.

What are we going to do?

How are we going to get home?

It's too far to walk.

So we started walking anyway and we came upon a hotel and we thought, well, maybe they'll be able to get us a taxi.

We'd left the crowds behind.

We'd walked for half an hour.

And we're in this hotel.

It's now about three in the morning, four in the morning.

And we went up to the reception desk and asked, could they possibly help us by getting us a taxi?

And there's no chance, absolutely no chance of taxis.

No taxis.

And there was an American guy checking out beside us on his way to the airport.

And he heard us asking, he said, I have a taxi coming.

I'll give you guys a lift if it's on the way to the airport.

So our hotel magically became on the way to the airport.
