What McFarlane does so well in this book as well is that she takes people experience such a specific moment of personal chaos.
But she just writes it with such incredible control.
And it is so, so specific.
that you can hang your hat on any emotional character in this book and you will chart them through.
And it's a big book.
And so you have a chance to really get to know these characters, even though it takes place over seven days, I think.
It's just immense.
My next selection is Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Howe.
So Cold Enough for Snow is about a woman and her mother who are traveling around Japan on a holiday.
And they take trains, they visit galleries and museums, and they eat meals together.
And there is a space between them that this trip is designed to close.
And Cold Enough for Snow, it's like a beautiful, crisp, crystal river.
It's a pay under paying attention.
And it asks what the role of art is in all its forms.
What role does art play in the act of being present, whether that is with oneself or with another.
There's a line in the book that says, perhaps it was all right not to understand all things, but simply to see and hold them.
And I think that this book is a poetic and achingly beautiful instruction manual on how to do exactly that.
You're right, it's the total opposite.
It couldn't be shorter.
It couldn't be shorter.
