So after Billy escapes from Pat Garrett's jail in Lincoln, Pat Garrett goes to get him outside of Lincoln County as a U.S.
deputy marshal.
And he's
Delays three months.
Billy escapes at the end of April.
And Pat Garrett doesn't go to Fort Sumner until July, July 14th, 1881.
in pursuit of Billy the Kid.
He takes his time.
But when he gets there, it's completely by accident.
It's coincidental that they run into each other.
Pat Garrett is searching for Billy the Kid, and he has his two deputies with him.
And they go into town, Lincoln, and the surrounding area, and nobody will tell him where Billy the Kid is.
So Pat Garrett decides on the night of July 14th
to go to the home of Pete Maxwell, who was the prominent figurehead in Fort Sumner.
And he is in Maxwell's bedroom asking Maxwell, and this is about midnight, a little before midnight, where is Billy the Kid?
Is he here in Fort Sumner?
And Maxwell says, yeah, he's here.
I don't know where, blah, blah, blah.
