would have been adopted from his stepfather, who was William Antrim, and he kept the H as his middle initial for Henry.
So he was not Billy the Kid at this time.
He was William H. Bonney, or the Kid, simply the Kid.
It wasn't until December of 1880 that a newspaper in New Mexico gave William H. Bonney the moniker Billy the Kid.
He did not adopt the name.
They gave it to him.

And Billy has a pistol in his pocket, doesn't have a holster, has it in his pocket, gets free, gets his hand free, grabs the pistol and shoots Wendy Cahill in the stomach.
Lincoln County at that time encompassed the entire southeast corner of New Mexico.
It was the largest county in New Mexico and was probably almost a quarter of the state.
