Cuba's government says the pardons are a humanitarian gesture in connection with Holy Week.

The government said it has released foreigners and Cubans, including women, the elderly, and young people.

Authorities didn't name who was released or under what conditions, nor did it mention the crimes they were accused of committing.

Cuba's government does not recognize the existence of political prisoners, but the activist group prisoners defended registered more than 1,000 people in prison for political reasons in the Caribbean country.
