In January, the Pentagon rescinded a regulation that maintains the paper's independence.
In April, it fired the paper's ombudsman, a role created by Congress to safeguard the paper's independence.
And earlier this month, the Pentagon hired a new deputy publisher for Stars and Stripes, an active duty Navy captain named William Urban.
The firings came only days after the paper began reporting on the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier.
It was the first outlet to publish details about mental health concerns and poor conditions aboard the ship during its record-long deployment in the Middle East for the Iran War.
The Pentagon has said the firings were for insubordination, and did not comment beyond that.
However, Urban, the Navy captain and new deputy publisher of the paper, wrote an open letter on Friday.
It didn't directly address the firings, but it did express confidence that the Pentagon would respect the paper's independence.
And he cited the USS Lincoln as an example that it already does, writing that the Pentagon had, quote, plenty of time to shut down the paper's reporting on the ship, but didn't.
Still, Nover spoke with people who work at Stars and Stripes, who say they're still concerned about the paper's ability to report independently, given the Pentagon's hostility to the press.
