The Big Bend National Park sits near the Texas-Mexico border.

And to police it, the Department of Homeland Security wants to build out massive border patrol infrastructure.

That's Carlos Morales, a veteran journalist of the area who's been covering the project for NPR.

But the plans quickly drew criticism from local law enforcement, outdoor enthusiasts, and business owners.

So much so that it's forced the US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott into a sharp reversal on Monday.

The plan for Big Ben has multiple stages.

One phase is for traditional barriers outside the park.

The department has backed off on the idea of any border wall inside the park itself, but there are still big plans for border patrol activity in the area.

The park is about the size of Rhode Island, a vast area to patrol.

It sits on the US-Mexico border in far west Texas, and its rugged terrain makes it a challenging place to cross into the US.

The local pushback to the administration's plans comes from multiple directions.

Some are calling it government overreach and overspending.

Others told Morales that constructing these types of barriers leaves them unable to work as river guides or in other nature-related professions.

Outgoing Republican Senator John Cornyn recently asked federal officials to meet with locals before moving ahead.

Big Bend, Morales told us, is a point of pride for many Texans.

It's not clear how long the pause will last, but US Customs and Border Protection promise to secure borders while protecting the park for quote generations to come.
