I do see myself as having a moral obligation to say something about how unsafe all of these flights are.

Every single one of them was dangerous because the people were shackled.

And you can't evacuate within 90 seconds with shackled people.

I mean, it was completely random.

It was May 20th of 2025.

I was a staff writer at the Washington Post.

I took the first buyout at the end of 2023.

I wrote about history.

I was working on a book about the history of resistance to slavery.

But I used to be a flight attendant, and I'm still kind of an aviation geek.

There were all these breaking news reports about lawyers saying that they'd been told that their clients had been put on a plane and sent to South Sudan, a country that they were not from, and that it was against the judge's specific orders.

And so I just thought...

I wonder if I can figure out what plane they're on.

You know, the lawyers were saying the plane was still in the air.

So it took me a couple of hours, but I did eventually figure out the plane.

The New York Times later confirmed that was in fact the plane.

And it landed actually to refuel in Shannon Airport in Ireland.

You know, at that point, I wasn't covering this.

I was just watching it like everyone else was.
