So basically they decided the private money wasn't there or not there to a great enough extent to actually finance this project.
Um and you know, I gather that looking back at the Bernstein book he points out that the car now basically needed um public financing, ownership and control by New York State.
But
If they start looking to the state for help, it begs the question of why on earth wouldn't they just go to the federal government?
Let's get back to eighteen twelve and it seems that by then there's a lot going against the whole idea of whether the Erie Canal will ever fly.
I mean they've already had a whole bunch of canal projects fail.
Um you've had essentially the federal government say no.
Um but in the true all American spirit, they ain't giving up yet.
And so we're gonna find out after the break what happens next.

I mean this seems like the very worst moment to actually try and start a massive project.

You know, American history is littered with big risk takers who say, Well, it looks like a terrible moment to do something.

And in this case, DeWitt Clinton was thoroughly undeterred.
Because after the war of eighteen twelve was finally finished in eighteen fifteen, after all that burning and killing, the members of the Erie Canal Commission decide they're going to try and get funding.
But they decide to be innovative and do this in a whole new way.
So what do they do?

So it's a bit like doing a sort of nineteenth century version of GoFundMe campaign until they actually got the ball rolling properly and more widely.
