But I'm curious because one of the things that emerges from this whole saga is the rise of this America-first attitude on the part of President Nixon, which is so similar to what we're seeing today in President Trump, in some ways even more so. matched

And the other thing we're seeing is also that matched

The system, the Brettonwood system, seemed very strong and everyone assumed it was going to last forever until suddenly it cracked. matched

Do you think we can imagine a world today where America first nationalism leads to a serious unraveling of the dollar as a reserve currency? matched

And that of course is one reason why talking about this history is so potent when trying to make sense for the current situation we're in. matched

Let us take you back instead to 9pm East Coast time on the 15th of August 1971. matched

US President Richard Milhouse Nixon is making a surprise appearance on the major TV networks, elbowing aside a scheduled viewing of Bonanza. matched

That was then the biggest TV show in America at the time. matched

Unemployment and inflation are big concerns for American voters. matched

These are the early days of 1970s stagflation and both are on the rise. matched

So, drumroll, then he turns to the international speculation bit of his address. matched

Now, the dollar's value is tied to gold and every other major currency is tied to the dollar. matched

So by cutting that link, Nixon is threatening to set adrift not only his own currency, but all of his allies' currencies as well in a chain reaction. matched

And the thing to stress is until that afternoon, nobody knew it was coming, apart from Nixon and a tiny band of his very closest political allies who just spent the weekend together holed up in a secret meeting in a forest retreat in Maryland. matched

And these are questions that keep reverberating through history. matched
