Yeah, I think something we have to remember or is worth remembering is the F1 driver pool is still reeling from the end of the Senna-Prost-PK-Mansel era earlier in the decade.
It hasn't quite been replenished yet with a full next breed of superstars.
It's kind of Michael Schumacher's head and shoulders above everyone else.
And as we said, Hacken doesn't come good yet.
Lacey's about to get found out.
Jack Villeneuve's only just arrived.
Damon Hill's peaking at this point.
So it's yeah, it's not like it's quite interesting.
Quite often we have the benefit of hindsight on this show and we're able to go, well, that's what you did wrong.
That's what you did wrong.
Why didn't you hire him?
And actually with Benetton, we're kind of going wrong.
the Schumacher irresistible force might have been something that you just couldn't you couldn't put a solution in place for afterwards
Let's finish then with the big question.
What if Schumacher had stayed?
Briatore has said several times, multiple interviews, a long way apart, that 100% Schumacher would have won the title in 96 and 97 if he'd stayed.
Simmons agrees with that, at least for 96, from what I've seen Pat say.
Braun has said on the record that the 96 car was very good, just like the 95 car and should have won races.
Obviously, Benetton didn't win any races in 96.
I'm told by people who have spoken to Ross about this off the record that he agrees that Schumacher would have won that championship in 96, in the 96 Benetton.
