So let's finish with that question there.
Matt, you can go first.
It's been debated ever since Schumacher left Benetton for Ferrari.
Would he have won the title in 1996 if he'd stayed with Benetton?
Yeah, yeah.
That's really interesting.
I came into this recording, my answer was going to be that the Williams was too good in 96, that even Schumacher staying in a Benetton that's kind of been designed for him, even though as we've explored, why on earth was it designed for him when they knew he was never going to drive it?
But it's actually, it's kind of something Matt raised it first there that I think has actually put me off, which is that
The Damon Hill mental reset happens because he knows Michael's effectively going away.
He knows that Schumacher at Ferrari probably isn't going to be a threat, so he can have that reset.
If Schumacher's still at Benetton, even if the Williams is a bit better and much more reliable...
I do wonder if Damon's not quite as serene as he was at the start of 96.
Everyone at Williams says Damon came back a completely different person at the start of 96.
Is he able to do that if he knows that Michael Schumacher is still in a Benetton?
The Benetton's got the number one on it again.
Is that Benetton a better car than the Ferrari was that Schumacher was driving?
It's got to be.
So I think I've changed my mind over the course of you two talking about
Yeah, I came into this thinking, no, Damon would still win it.
I think the 96 Benetton and how good that could have been is overplayed with Schumacher in it.
