I thank folks who tuned in. This is our fight. It's our time. Nobody's going to come riding in here.
Thanks, Ben, and thanks for having us on. And thank you, everybody who tuned in. I, too, want people to leave here tonight with hope. I see people speaking up every day. I see people standing up every day around this country as more and more people are realizing the pain and the consequence of Donald Trump and what he is doing. And I just encourage people to continue to stay at it.
And understand that this is... This is going to be a marathon. It's going to take some time. And we just got to stay at it every single day. You know, basketball, I was a basketball player. Basketball is big in my background. It's a team sport. Everybody's got a role to play. And there's something about basketball where, you know, you got to play offense and you got to play defense.
And as a point guard, if I stood up, you'd see I'm only 5'4". It's about making plays, right? And it's about the assist. And everybody's got a way to play. to participate in what we need to do right now as a country. So, you know, get out there, get after it, continue to talk to people, share experiences. I think that's really important.
On social media, if you see somebody posting something and you think it's a good telling of something that's going on, then share that because the voices... Elected leaders matter. Politicians matter. But every day, Americans matter more. They always have. They always had.
And I was reminded of that when I stood in Concord for the 250th celebrations, when that ragtag ban of farmers and tradespeople and, you know, other colonists faced down a mighty, mighty British army and king. And, you know, at the end of the day, we know what happened there. Yeah. continue on with the work.
And I look forward to being able to work with many of you and talk with many of you over the coming weeks, months, and years. Thank you for what you do.
All right. Thank you, Ben. And I'm always inspired when I hear my fellow governors. And these are just a small sampling. I believe that this is the new leadership that our country needs is among the ranks of our governors. And they're extraordinary leaders really in there fighting the fight right now, not just talking about or pontificating about it. I'll tell you a couple of things.
Donald Trump killed a lot of things. What he killed was killing our economy. He's killing education. He's killing health care. But you know what? He also killed complacency. I don't think there's an American alive right now who's watching what is unfolding over these last 100 days and there's 1,362 more to go. that are feeling complacent or apathetic and gonna sit on the sidelines. No, no, no.
They are energized. They're mobilized. They're ready to organize. And I can feel it right now in every corner of my state and across this country. And that is the power of the American people. Don't ever count us down. We're never out. We do fight back. And I can give you one example of hope because that's something seems a little bit of lost today. A lot of people are giving up hope.
They're despairing over the state of affairs and their own family's affairs. I would cut my teeth into politics. My parents used to protest the Vietnam War. I used to wear a black armband when I was in my Catholic grade school. The nuns didn't like that, but this is in my genes. I'm genetically created to protest and be an agitator.
I was a kid when I saw Richard Nixon resign in disgrace after Watergate and fly off in a helicopter off the White House lawn. Our country was in disarray. The vice president was in trouble. Our country was literally imploding. We lost young people during the Vietnam War. We lost people at Kent State, the shooting. Look it up in your history books, young people.
But listen, you know what happened the next year? 1974 was the greatest wave of Democrats elected to Congress that our country had seen at that point. had seen at that point. So that's what's in store for us. You don't give up. You use that anger and channel it into action. That's what I'm calling for from everyone. We'll stand together. We'll get through this. We've been through a lot.
And we look back, people look back at our time and ask, your grandkids will ask you, what did you do during the Trump administration? You can look at them and say, I fought back and we won.
This budget was not written to please everyone. It was written to bring everyone to the table. And when we get there, we're going to have disagreements, no doubt. My progressive friends might have wished we were cutting a little less. My conservative friends might wish we were cutting a little bit more. My wife wishes that I would take the pay raise that was offered, but I turn it down.
But this is how government's supposed to work. It's not supposed to be one old man sitting in the Oval Office sending out middle-of-the-night tweets that shot markets into freefall. It's not supposed to be a bunch of 20-somethings unelected showing up at federal agencies and firing everyone. It's not supposed to be chaos and destruction.
It's supposed to be good people elected by their neighbors with differing opinions coming together to negotiate in good faith.
And on a... Hour by hour, day by day basis, the president of the United States has chosen, chosen to throw our economy into turmoil. Global markets are teetering on the brink of collapse. Businesses across this country and here in Minnesota are already laying off employees by the thousands. Working people are paying more for basic goods. And if you haven't checked your 401k lately, don't do it.
So let's be very clear. None of this had to happen. When the president took office three months ago, there was no reason to throw a wrench in the works and destroy decades of work. But if you listen to anything that comes out of his mouth, one thing has become clear. He's just plain confused about how the world really works for working people.
We're talking about a guy that slapped a 10% tariff on an island populated only by penguins. It'd be funny as hell if it wasn't true and stupid. It makes no sense to anyone. That isn't servant leadership. It's not any kind of leadership. It's small, it's weak, and it's petty.
