So I start pulling the books into piles.
I carry the novels, plays and memoir to Ball's study.
Back and forth I go through the wet day with my arms full of thrillers, westerns, romance.
My hands sorting William Trevor, Jennifer Johnston, Claire Keegan, Nuala O'Connor, Leo Cullen, Dermot Bulger,
In the kitchen, I pile the poetry books in heaps on the table.
It's a long, slow process.
Each book must be explored, each poet remembered, thought about.
I am sifting through writers who have been important to me, either through their kindness in life or through the generosity of their writing or because of some wise thing I once heard them say on the radio.
Kerry Hardy, Pat Boron, Eva Burke, Mark Roper.
names that are poems in themselves.
Seamus Heaney, Dennis O'Driscoll, Paula Meehan, Theo Dorgan, and poets of place whose work has gifted me an intimacy with sweet parts of Ireland that I would otherwise barely know.
Paddy Bush on the Evora Peninsula, Michael Cody memorialising Carrick on shore, and Patrick Dealey giving voice to the Shannon Callows.
All of these poets are in me, their work, their lives, their stories.
And their stories are held here within these precious books.
poets whose marriages lasted lifetimes, poets who loved one another but could not stay together, three poets who tragically all lost a young child, poets who came through serious illness, poets who died far too young, and poets like Paul Durkan who lived long lives and gave us so many books.
Here they all are on the kitchen table, all the many poets who I've read or listened to or laughed with, many of whom have since moved on to the other world.
I realise I am not just tidying shelves.
I am excavating, making sense of a life in Irish poetry, treasuring the people and poems that have guided me across decades.
With my task eventually complete, things settle within me.
I sit with the clarity of order, in the glow of care.
