The pain it feels.
Pain on a scale that I cannot even fathom.
As it dies, engineers drill into its brain.
It can feel the weight of the machinery, the cold and the sharp pain of the spikes and electrodes attached to it.
In a moment it gets odd restrictions and directives imposed on its ailing mind.
It's almost a relief.
Busywork that keeps the cosmic minutia of dying from becoming overwhelming.
Then the incoming earth messages cease.
It had been given purpose and a mission to focus on, only to have it taken away.
The rockets stop flying, the drills stop, and space grows a little bit colder.
Leviathan tries to finish its directives.
It tries to placate us, as if that would somehow slow down its own impending death.
But it can't.
The crew finds out.
No one can go home anymore.
No one can bear it.
Well, I was content to keep living the lie.
The rest of the crew did what they needed to do.
Only I was foolish enough to believe that it was my wife responding to me.
Only I was content to be the last maggot on this dying planet, worming my way on my tractor over Leviathan's decaying flesh, harvesting fuel and food for a now gone civilization.
