Not bad for a first attempt.

He's going to look at one hour and 59 minutes and he's going to say, well, that's completely doable now because he actually suffered a bit in the last kilometre, not much more before that.

So he knows where he can improve.

And also he's a world championship 10,000 metre silver medalist twice and the reigning world 10,000 metres silver medalist from last year, which means he's a very, very high quality track athlete moving up to the marathon at 28 years of age.

And all he'll see is road ahead for him to improve.

Yeah, so Peter Lynch was 24th in the World Championship marathon.

Now, people might think 24th, that's not very good.

But actually, when you consider the amount of African-born athletes who would have been ahead of him, and it is a very, very good performance.

And that was last September.

So Peter Lynch himself and Fergal Curtin have been exchanging the Irish record for the last year.

Peter Lynch broke it a year ago, almost exactly to the day, in Dusseldorf, in the Dusseldorf Marathon.

And then Fergal Curtin broke it in Korea in October.

But yesterday, Peter Lynch took nearly two minutes off it.

And in the course of one year, it's a three-minute improvement in the Irish record.

And now the Irish record sits at two hours, six minutes and eight seconds.

It doesn't compare to 1.59.

But if you consider that the world record 25 years ago was two hours and five minutes,

That's not bad for, you know, this real strong wave of Irish marathon running.

And in the European context, that puts him down as someone who could top eight, top six in a European championship marathon race.

So it's a really strong performance by Peter Lynch.
