That era sort of came to an end in domestic cricket a couple of years ago, and quite a few good young players are now playing at the domestic level.
So I think that the medium term future for Australian cricket is pretty good.
What we do in the next couple of years will decide how good that is.
And whilst the temptation is to pick somebody with experience ahead of somebody with potential,
is often there.
What you give up is longevity.
I mean, if you pick someone at 22, they've got 10, 12, 14 years at the highest level.
And most of the guys that have been the champions of this past era have played that length of time because they were picked early.
If you're not looking to pick, I mean, my theory with selection, my job as a selector wasn't to pick average players.
It was to pick champions.
It was to build great teams.
And I was lucky to work with some of the great chairman of selectors that Australian cricketers have.
Back to Laurie Saul from Western Australia when I was the first selector in the mid-80s.
Very, very strong character.
Trevor Holmes.
didn't say much you didn't hear much from trevor but behind the scenes really really strong in his beliefs and and and what we we should be doing as selectors and then andrew hilditch you know was an exceptional individual very diligent um because he was very quiet and didn't didn't say very much
was probably misread on occasions, but I can tell you they're three of the most diligent blokes that I've ever worked with and really smart cricket people.
Not to say that we haven't had others as chairman of selectors like Rod Marsh and John Inverarity and others over the years, but they were the three that I worked with.
And they were terrific.
And they understood that our role was to pick great teams, put together great teams.
