And what does that mean?

Well, it means people who don't need to spend their time making the stuff they need to stay alive.

They don't, in fact, have a job they have to do.

One of my old professors once described Aristotle as having a consumer's ethics.

And I think there's something really right about that.

If you are a member of the leisured aristocratic class, what are you going to do with your time?

Well, maybe you'll become civically active.

Maybe you'll just be a kind of party animal.

Maybe you'll just try and get more and more wealth.

But why would you do that?

You already have enough wealth to be at leisure.

Or maybe you'll go in for philosophy.

And these seem to be the candidate lives open to people.

At least they're the ones he was considering.

And you can understand why he would focus on those in that historical context.

Frankly, though, there was another kind of life people were leading even then that in his ethics he doesn't really mention.

And in the politics where he does talk about it, he has some pretty bleak things to say about.

And that's the life of what in Greece was called a binausos, a kind of artisan or work handiworker.

This would be someone, say, whose job was to manufacture shields,

or maybe pottery.
