I stole my mom and dad's tape recorder, those old kind you had to push, press, record, and play really hard to record.
And record had that red button that no one knows what it's doing.
I realized that, so that made me want to do it and do it for fun.
But the obsessive drive to do it perfectly and excellently and make a living at it was driven by the low self-esteem desire to be anybody but myself.
Maybe partly why my career didn't go as far as it maybe could have or should have is because I can't actually be Al Pacino.
I think I was sort of weirdly shooting for that.
I was trying to imitate everybody to get there, you know?
Well, I had to address that in acting class with the late great Roy London.
I went in there and I was like 26.
He took one look at me and said, okay, in this class, you're not allowed to do any voices at all except your own.
