But we can probably safely say this particular strain that caused the Black Death came from East.
Because even before those twelve death ships pulled into port at Messina, Europe had been awash with rumours about a great pestilence that was cutting through China, India, Persia, Syria, and Egypt.
Now of course this wasn't the only entry point for the deadly plague into Europe.
Trade routes with the East in general are thought to have been the culprit.
Rats and their fleas hopped on board trading ships carrying grains, spices, and textiles.
At the time Italy was the centre of trade with the East, and it is very much ground zero for the outbreak of the plague in Europe.
Once the Black Death was in Italy, it took hold and it spread rapidly.
In three months, twenty per cent of the population of Italy was dead.
