The last major study on missing children in the US was carried out way back in 2002.
It's got a really long title, hasn't it?
Yes, the National Incident Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Thrown Away Children funded by the US Department of Justice.
It compiled data from a range of sources, including police reports, interviews with parents and children, and it found there'd been 800,000 reports of missing children in the US during the year it focused on, 1999.
Well, media reports on missing children often don't make that definition clear.
For example, the headline figure in an article on Parents.com, one of the most popular parenting sites in the US, claims every 40 seconds in the United States a child becomes missing or is abducted.
In fact, the Department of Justice study found almost half of those cases were what it calls benign missing.
That means their parents or guardian thought they were missing.
Maybe they didn't come home on time or there was some confusion over where they were meeting, but they turned up soon afterwards.
Professor David Finkelhor co-authored the report.
He's director of the Crimes Against Children Research Centre at the University of New Hampshire in the US.
