And I didn't know if it was going to work.
I'd had no idea if I was making a terrible mistake.
But our choices were either to go to Melbourne to be with family there or to go back to the UK and be with family there.
And in the end, I felt that the UK would be just perhaps being closer to my mum and my brother there.
I think I just needed to step away from Australia just for a little bit, just to kind of breathe.
I think I had been searching quite desperately for rituals to pin our grief to.
We weren't a religious family.
We didn't have religion to kind of have as a framework to guide us through our experience of loss.
So it was quite hard at times to...
to know what the right things were to do, you know, like how do you conduct a funeral when you don't have that religious framework?
And, you know, in terms of releasing the ashes, I felt like it was obviously a really significant moment and one that the kids might remember because we did it almost two years after Matt had died.
So we're just that little bit older.
So I knew that it should have some kind of sense of ceremony, but I also didn't want it to feel like this big kind of...
you know, Matt was a really simple, authentic kind of man.
So in the end, we decided we would go down to the spot by the harbour that we all loved.
And we took the ashes down.
We were just with a very few, very small group of people.
And I kind of bumbled my way through some words, which I hadn't really thought about properly.
And it all felt a little bit wrong, felt like
We hadn't said quite the right thing.
