Federal law requires the Census Bureau to keep people anonymous in its statistics.
The Trump administration has banned one of the main ways the Bureau has done that, adding what's known as statistical noise to make certain data fuzzy, especially data about local areas and minority populations who could be easy to identify.
In a statement, Commerce Department spokesperson Kristen Eichemer says the indiscriminate use of noise infusion has undermined confidence in the department's products and cast doubt on their integrity.
Eichemer did not respond when NPR asked for examples.
The Census Bureau took down multiple pages about data privacy protections from its website.

Eligible voters in Arizona who want to cast ballots in the state's July 21st primary have until Monday to register.
Monday is also Colorado's deadline for signing up online or getting a mail-in application postmarked.
though there is more time to register in person through Colorado's primary day on June 30th.
Same day, in-person registration is also available in Maryland and Utah, though states are holding their primary days on Tuesday.
If you have already registered to vote, you may want to go to your election official's website and check your registration status before your state's deadline.
Election officials may remove your name from their list of registered voters, especially if you have recently moved, changed your name, or haven't voted in a while.
