And one thing I thought was interesting is that uh

Howard kind of allows that mission, his vocation, if you will, to slowly develop.

It's also not even clear that Solomon Cain, the character, has fully worked out what it is that he's actually doing.

And just like a few maybe spot checks um to show that.

So he goes, so we have the encounter with with the young woman, and then obviously then we get the re the first revenge narrative here where the band

bandits in the cave and he blows up the hut and just, you know, that did strike me like a Western, right?

Just like this slaughter of the whole bandit group.

But there's a line on uh I'll just read these out loud for the benefit of uh all of us.

So on page thirty-seven he says uh I thought it was interesting that he's characterized as a mix between uh being an idealist, like a dreamer, but then also being a fanatic.

And that was an interesting uh coupling.

And then later on

Uh, I think it's Wolf is speaking to him and asking him, like, why are you even doing this?

And Howard writes, Cain could not have explained even to himself, nor did he ever seek an explanation within himself.

A true fanatic, his promptings were reasons enough for his actions.

I thought that was really interesting that as we're trying to understand Cain, Kane is actually trying to understand his own fanaticism for, I guess, justice itself.

and I wonder if we can explore that just a little bit more because I I really like the comparison that you've made.

So in Conan, we see that Howard seems to be drawing together the juxtaposition between the civilized and the barbarian.

But he always turns it on its head, right?

Like the quote that I mentioned.

That's why I always love that quote, because it shows a little bit about what Howard's doing with the character of Conan, where you know, Conan goes into, you know, whether it's the pub or the tavern house or whatever, and he's made fun of being the barbarian, but everyone around him.
