Which is a bold claim for anyone to say to the King of England.
That was actually the one that got her condemned.
Well, so if you think about it, Tudor England was something incredible.
I don't feel we can really appreciate how spiritual and superstitious a time it was.
Lifespans were short, so life on earth was sort of seen as a prelude to everlasting salvation in God's spiritual kingdom.
And so the only sort of guidance they had to go by is how to navigate earth.
was the revelations and the wondrous teachings of the Bible.
So they clung to all those incredible stories there.
And anyone who had a closer... Well, was deemed to have a closer spiritual connection to God, which is your preachers and your visionaries and your prophets, anyone who could potentially...
cure you or forgive your sins, indulgences at this time were huge.
And this is something that Martin Luther was calling out.
So an indulgence was essentially, for anyone who doesn't know, the sale of forgiveness for your sins.
So for a donation to the church, you could have your sins wiped clean, or maybe some of your years in purgatory could be washed clean.
However, people took advantage of this and there were a few corrupt indulgence preachers.
One who is a great example of this is called Johann Tetzel.
And he said that the indulgence that I am selling is so potent that it could forgive the sins of a man who had violated the Virgin Mary.
Yeah, that's what everyone started to push back against.
And like the sale of access to holy relics, which people did believe in them.
But then again, there were people who, Anne Boleyn looked into one at Hales Abbey, that priests were mixing up a concoction that was pretending to be the blood of Christ, which people would then pay to be in front of and be cured by.
So, yeah, there was a lot of corruption, but that's how people believed so much in these visionaries.
