So that in the past, when an officer of the government said something, you know, I was always of the opinion of trust but verify, right? matched

You would see what they said, and then you would go find the documents and see if they lined up. matched

And every leader always puts spin on it. matched

Sometimes there's such spin that it's absolutely disingenuous. matched

But I really realized the other day when that picture of Mitch McConnell came out, my first reaction was not trust but verify. matched

My first reaction was, it's got to be fake. matched

And then I went to learn about it, you know? matched

And that idea that we can't trust anything the government says anymore, I'm just shocked at how fast that has fallen apart. matched

Mm-hmm. matched

But there's a couple of interesting things that come out of that. matched

And one of them, I think, is when I was thinking about why I felt that way, just as a human being, not as somebody who knows Mitch McConnell or studies or anything, there's like some smell tests, right? matched

Where you use your common sense to say, is this plausible or is this not plausible? matched

And in a way, because the administration has become so untrustworthy online, matched

a lot of people seem to be applying the smell test to a lot of areas where we might not otherwise have done it. matched

And with luck, that will become part of our larger conversation about really big policies as opposed to whether or not Mitch McConnell is functional. matched

I don't think Mitch McConnell is dead. matched

I think that that would be representing that he is alive when he is not. matched

I assume breaks at least some laws of fraud. matched
