It took me a long time to, you know, unburden myself, which I did initially in the form of a memoir called Just Ignore Him.
And I've just written another volume of memoir, which is kind of,
Part two called White Male Stand-Up.
It's about losing my mum.
It's about this abuse story with my father.
And when I was writing the second volume, I started to work up kind of alongside it ideas for a stand-up show and really wanting to talk about all the more difficult things that I've experienced in that form, thinking, well, I've been doing this for 35 years.
I'm able to turn my hand to it.
I know there are people in the audience who've had similar experiences.
I know there are people filling theatres or turning up, just sitting there in silence, as I did for decades.
Let's get it out in the open and I try and be as funny as possible and present the full version of who I am, really.
And it's really paying off.
The response is really good.
It's been very gratifying.
I didn't know how it would go.
And I just think it's the best show I've done.
I feel really funny when I'm up there, even though every now and then there's a pause and there's a turn off the comedy road for a moment and then we're back on.
I'm sure they do, yeah.
I'm sure they do.
Perhaps not everyone.
Some people just want to purely escape.
