At first I thought my fear had paralyzed me.
But the weight became heavier and heavier.
As if slabs of rock were being heaved onto them.
Within moments, the invisible weight sent excruciating pain bursting through my lower body.
My leg bones felt like they were about to splinter.
Beneath my cries of pain.
I heard a snap in my right knee, and searing agony tore through that leg.
There was no running from this.
With unuttered spells.
The ghost was seeing to that.
Finally, when the blur from the pain subsided from my vision.
And I could see past the cloud of tears.
I looked up to see the ghoul standing over me.
My gaze had been immediately sucked into the white orbs of his eyes.
Eyes like those of the dreadful telescope fish.
And the creature bent down and stood on his knees.
Paralyzed, I could do nothing, not even scream, when his cold fingers curled around my wrist.
He straightened my ragdoll arm and ran the tip of the blade down the sleeve, ripping the fabric cleanly past the cuff.
When the torn sleeve parted, the skin of my forearm revealed.
The creature started to cut symbols into my flesh.
